Lehman College members of ASEZ (Save the Earth From A to Z) hosted a Crime Prevention College and invited speakers to educate members, fellow college students and the community about the importance of reducing crime and recommended steps everyone can take to do their part.
Under the slogan, “The Future Starts Here!” ASEZ takes the lead to creating dialogue on improving the world. ASEZ at Lehman College invited Dr. Juan J. DelaCruz, associate professor of economics; Denny Santos, assistant director of community engagement; Sargent Samuel Gonzales, supervisor at the department of public safety, and keynote speaker New York State Assembly Member Karines Reyes to present at the forum.
Assembly Member Reyes recalled her first time meeting and working with 120 volunteers of ASEZ. "What we did, in an afternoon, what the city of New York couldn’t do, what NYCHA couldn’t do. And that, I think, is a testament to the value of volunteerism, the value of commitment, and what you [ASEZ] have to offer. … By the time we were walking back [after the cleanup], people in the community had already set up chairs, and were thanking us that they were able to reclaim that space. It was quite amazing and every time I see it, it brings me to tears.”
All the speakers encouraged ASEZ members to continue displaying their passion for their environment and for their world through their activities and volunteer service. Deputy Director of the Department of Public Safety Gregory Nigri shared, “ASEZ is what Lehman is all about.”
All the guest speakers signed supporting agreements and Assembly Member Reyes personally presented ASEZ with a proclamation.
